What type of engine problem are you dealing with?

We built this page to make the route clear. Some engines need a full replacement, some need targeted repair, and some only need proper fault-finding before unnecessary parts get thrown at them.

Start with an inspection

Engine rebuilds

Strip-down, inspection and rebuild planning where the original engine is worth saving.

Replacement engines

When a replacement unit is the cleaner, faster or more economical option than rebuilding.

Timing chains & belts

Timing rattle, jumped timing, snapped belts, chain stretch and timing-related engine damage.

Internal diagnostics

Compression, oil pressure, overheating, misfire, coolant loss and mechanical noise investigation.

A proper engine job starts before the first bolt is removed.

The biggest mistake with engine work is jumping straight to the most expensive answer. Our process is designed to confirm the failure first, then price the right repair route.

01

Evidence first

We gather symptoms, videos, fault codes, vehicle history, service records and the exact engine code. This helps separate internal engine failure from turbo, injector, cooling, timing or electrical faults.

Registration Symptoms Fault codes Service history
02

Workshop inspection

The vehicle is inspected at Taunton HQ. Depending on the fault, this can include scan data, compression direction, oil/coolant checks, timing inspection, leak checks and mechanical noise assessment.

03

Repair route and quote

We advise whether the sensible route is targeted repair, head work, timing repair, engine rebuild, replacement engine, or in some cases not economically viable.

Repair Rebuild Replace Avoid waste
04

Build, test and handover

Approved work is completed through the workshop, with updates throughout the job and final checks before the vehicle is released.

Clear updates Parts record Final test

Stop driving if the engine is knocking, overheating, losing oil pressure or rattling badly on start-up.
Continuing to drive can turn a timing, cooling or oil pressure fault into complete engine failure.

Repair, rebuild or replace?

This is the part customers actually care about. The right answer depends on damage, cost, downtime, engine availability and the value of the vehicle.

Targeted repair

Best when the engine is fundamentally healthy and the issue is limited to one system.

  • Timing chain or timing belt repair
  • Head gasket / cylinder head route
  • Injector, turbo or cooling system fault that mimics engine failure

Engine rebuild

Best when the original engine is worth saving and the damaged parts can be restored properly.

  • Controlled strip-down and inspection
  • Repair route based on actual internal damage
  • Useful when a replacement engine is risky, rare or not cost-effective

Engine replacement

Best when the failed engine is too damaged or the rebuild cost no longer makes financial sense.

  • Suitable used or reconditioned unit route
  • Often better for severe bottom-end or overheating damage
  • Can be the more predictable route for customer downtime

Why engine jobs belong at HQ

Major engine work needs space, access, tooling, clean working conditions and time. That is why rebuilds, replacements and serious internal diagnostics are routed through Taunton HQ.

Ramp access and controlled conditionsBetter access underneath the vehicle and safer working for engine removal or deeper inspection.
Proper diagnostic timeEngine faults often need methodical checks, not rushed roadside guesswork.

Engine repair FAQs

Useful answers before booking an inspection.

Can you give me a price for an engine rebuild straight away?
We can usually give rough guidance from the registration, engine type and symptoms, but a proper quote depends on inspection. The same warning light or noise can have very different causes, so we prefer to confirm the failure before quoting major work.
Do you rebuild engines mobile?
No. Major engine rebuilds, replacement engines and serious strip-down work are workshop-based at Taunton HQ. Some initial diagnosis may be possible mobile, but engine rebuild work needs controlled workshop conditions.
Is a replacement engine better than rebuilding mine?
Sometimes, yes. If the original engine has serious bottom-end damage, overheating damage or poor parts availability, replacement can be more sensible. If the original engine is clean and repairable, a rebuild or targeted repair may be better.
Can you inspect a vehicle that does not run?
Yes, but non-running vehicles normally need to be recovered to Taunton HQ. Send us the registration, symptoms and location and we can advise the best route.
What warranty applies to engine work?
Applicable labour is covered by our labour warranty. Parts, replacement engines or reconditioned units are subject to supplier or manufacturer warranty terms. The exact warranty position depends on the parts route and will be confirmed with the quote.
Can you diagnose timing chain noise?
Yes. Timing chain noise, cam/crank correlation faults, chain stretch symptoms and timing-related no-start faults can be assessed. We will advise whether it looks like a timing repair, further strip-down or replacement route.
Need an honest answer on a failed engine?

Send the reg, symptoms, photos/videos and what happened before the fault appeared. We’ll advise whether to book inspection, recover it to Taunton HQ, or avoid spending money where the vehicle is unlikely to be economical.
