VEHICLE SYMPTOM GUIDE

A cylinder-misfire code tells you which cylinder the ECU noticed. It does not always tell you why.

On petrol engines, ignition components are common suspects, but injectors, compression, air leaks, wiring and fuelling can produce the same misfire code. Diesel misfires bring a different set of fuel, injector and mechanical checks.

!
DRIVING / SAFETY NOTE

A severe or flashing-light misfire can overheat the catalytic converter and should not be driven hard.

WHAT IT COULD MEAN

The symptom narrows the investigation. It does not prove the failed part.

On petrol engines, ignition components are common suspects, but injectors, compression, air leaks, wiring and fuelling can produce the same misfire code. Diesel misfires bring a different set of fuel, injector and mechanical checks.

Do not parts-cannon it.

A warning, noise or fault code can be caused by several different systems. Replacing the most commonly mentioned component online can cost more than diagnosing the cause properly.

POSSIBLE CAUSE CATEGORIES
01

Spark plug, ignition coil or ignition-circuit fault

02

Injector or fuel-delivery issue

03

Vacuum/intake leak affecting mixture

04

Low compression or valve/mechanical fault

05

Wiring/ECU driver or connector problem

06

Incorrect fuel/air measurement or another system causing combustion instability

HOW WE APPROACH IT

Evidence first, then the repair decision.

The exact tests depend on the vehicle, engine and fault, but the process should move from symptom → evidence → cause rather than code → part.

01Identify which cylinders and operating conditions are affected
02Use swap tests only where technically appropriate and safe
03Check ignition/injection command and electrical integrity
04Compare fuel trims/live data where relevant
05Perform compression/leak-down or other mechanical tests if needed
SYMPTOMWhat is the car actually doing?
→
TESTCodes, live data, electrical/mechanical checks.
→
CAUSEWhat evidence supports the diagnosis?
→
REPAIROnly then decide what needs replacing.
QUICK ANSWERS

Questions drivers often ask about engine misfire.

Does P0304 mean cylinder 4 coil is faulty?+

No. It means a misfire was detected on cylinder 4. Coil, plug, injector, wiring, compression and other causes still need separating.

Can I drive with a misfire?+

A mild intermittent fault is different from a severe active misfire. A flashing engine light or strong shaking should be treated urgently.

Can a mechanical problem cause a misfire code?+

Yes. Low compression, valve faults and timing issues can all cause combustion instability that the ECU records as a misfire.
